Both brands use OC as the active ingredient, but the major capsaicinoid concentration sets them apart. Wildfire runs 1.4% MC at 3 million SHU — the hottest formula in the lineup and the one I'd reach for if I needed maximum stopping effect at close range. Pepper Shot runs 1.2% MC at 2 million SHU — still a legitimate deterrent, more budget-friendly, and the right call if you want protection without paying for the top-shelf formula. Neither is a bad choice. The difference is about how much margin you want.
Stream pattern gives you directional accuracy — less risk of blowback in wind, easier to aim at a specific target. Fogger pattern creates area coverage — useful in an enclosed space but will hit you if the wind shifts. Gel is the tactical choice: it sticks on contact, has minimal blowback risk, and extends your effective range to 8–15 feet. If you're carrying indoors or in unpredictable weather, gel is worth the few extra dollars. Stream is the standard for outdoor everyday carry.

Major capsaicinoids (MC) are the active compounds in OC spray that cause the burning reaction. It's a more accurate potency measure than Scoville Heat Units alone. Wildfire is rated at 1.4% MC, Pepper Shot at 1.2% MC — both are effective, with Wildfire delivering a more intense effect at contact.

Q: How far does pepper spray reach?

Q: What's the difference between pepper spray and pepper gel?
Standard pepper spray atomizes into a mist or stream on discharge. Pepper gel fires a thick, sticky substance that adheres on contact — meaning it's far less likely to blow back on you in wind or enclosed spaces. Gel is also harder for an attacker to wipe off quickly, which extends the effect. The tradeoff is that gel requires more precise aim than a fogger.
Q: How long does pepper spray last before it expires?
Most OC spray canisters have a 2–4 year shelf life from manufacture. Check the expiration date on the canister when it arrives and replace it on schedule. A degraded canister may still discharge but at reduced potency — that's not a trade-off worth making when you actually need it.
